Content: (Topic)
Visual Arts - Halloween-themed: Spiderwebs
Instructional Strategies: (specific)
Direct instruction: talk and explain how the artwork is to be done.
Interactive instruction: demonstrate an example of the art and how watercolour is done.
Outcomes:
CP2.8 Create art works using a variety of visual art concepts (e.g., secondary colours), forms (e.g., collage, drawing, painting, sculpture, mobile, traditional art), and media (e.g., paper, found objects, paint, crayons).
Indicators:
(b) Demonstrate safety, co-ordination, and skills in using simple visual art tools and materials
(d) Illustrate how secondary colours are created when combing two primary colours.
Prerequisite Learning:
Students should have a basic understanding of what spiders and spiderwebs are and look like.
Differentiated Learning:
Ensure each student has paints and water cups, may have to double/triple up and share.
Preparation: (Materials, resources, equipment)
- Book (“Anancy and the Haunted House” by Richardo Keens-Douglas)
- White crayons
- White watercolour/multimedia paper
- Paint brushes
- Watercolour paints
- Cups for water
Set: (15 min)
- Read “Anancy and the Haunted House” by Richardo Keens-Douglas’ to the students
- Connect the book to the activity: insinuate that the theme of the book is in relation to the activity: spiders.
- Explain and demonstrate the activity to the students. Ensure that the students understand the activity clearly.
Student Engagement/Classroom Management Strategies:
- The clapping method
Development: (25 min)
- Each student will receive a piece of watercolour/multimedia paper.
- With a white crayon, draw a spider web.
- Use a variety of watercolours and paint over the entire page. Painting over the web is possible, as the wax in the crayons is water resistant, so the watercolour will not cover up the web.
- Once the students have finished painting, they are to leave their sheets on their desks to dry (as it is at the end of the day).
Closure: (5 min)
Circulate the room and see how each student is doing with their work. Answer and questions or concerns and try to help and solve and problems they may have.
Reflection:
What went well?
The students loved the medium used; they had never worked with watercolours before, so they were very interested in experiencing a new medium.
What didn’t?
The students were quite boggled that they couldn’t see the white crayon on the white paper. Perhaps a giving the students a fair warning that it is okay if they cannot see what is being drawn, as spiderwebs are never perfect and never look the same.
What would you go back and change, if you could?
I would give the students a fair warning about not being able to see the white crayon, and that holding the paper in different lights helps see the crayon reflection.
