Strand: Shape and Space: 2D objects
Grade Level: 2
Activity Name: Snowflake Geometry
Number of Students and Location: 4-5. Classroom, perhaps in small table groups would work best.
Outcome:
SS2.4: Describe, compare, and construct 2-D shapes, including triangles, squares, rectangles and circles.
Indicators:
(f) Create a model to represent a 2-D shape
Resources/Materials/Equipment:
-“The Shapes of my Snowflake” booklet
-Scissors
-Glue
Description of Activity (procedures):
Give each student “The Shapes of my Snowflake” bundle that includes a variety of shapes, and the snowflake building sheet (one with the circle on it). Instruct the students to first explore with the shapes they are given. Have them identify each shape by matching them to the shapes in their shape identification sheet.Show the students your example that you had made prior.Give the students time to explore and play with the geometry shapes to make their snowflakes.Instruct students to glue their geometry shapes down to their paper using their glue sticksHave the students count the different shapes that they have used in their snowflakes and have them record it down on the likes below their snowflake.
Assessment:
Circulate as the children use the manipulatives to build their snowflake designs. Approach students and see if they are able to name each shape, and count the different shapes.Use the pictures and the paper masterpieces to asses after the activity.
Adaptation/Variation/Extension:
- If students have completed their snowflakes, encourage them to build other designs with the geometry blocks. (ex. Houses, toys, other shapes — four triangles make a square.)
